Enthusiast's Guide to Travelling the Railways of Europe

CZECH REPUBLIC (Česká Republika)

Lines with obscure or sparse passenger services

This list is based on the timetable dated from 10 December 2006 to 8 December 2007, unless otherwise stated. Standard abbreviations used are explained in the General Information document. In the heading to each entry, the map reference for the line in the Malkus Atlas Drah České Republiky (2006/7 edition) is shown, in italic, in addition to the reference to M.G. Ball's European Railway Atlas.

Last update for this page: 09 May 2007.

IMPORTANT NOTE: in the Czech Railways timetable Jízdní Řád, the "crossed hammers" working days symbol means "Mondays to Fridays" not, as for most other railways, "Mondays to Saturdays".

Obscure services

Praha hl. n. – Praha-Libeň via tunnel and Praha-Vítkov [010, 011] (35A3, 36A-B) CZ07/1

Following substantial engineering works closing the steeply-graded route direct to the former Praha-Hrabovka station at the eastern end of the Masarykovo station layout in December 2005, all trains departing north-east from Praha hl. n must now use the tunnel and Praha-Vítkov route.

Praha-Běchovice – Praha-Malešice – Praha-Vršovice [010, 011] (35B2, 36B) CZ07/2

Due to engineering operations at the north-east end of Praha hl.n. (see CZ07/1), some trains to and from the Kolín direction again use this mainly freight-only route. There are 10 inbound and 8 outbound services identifiable in the timetable with the wavy line marking against stations Praha-Liben to Praha-Bechovice inclusive, and (usually) an advertised call at Praha-Vršovice.

Velký Osek – Sány (výhybna Kanín) via direct curve [020] (36A1, 23) CZ07/3

There are two single-track routes between Velký Osek and the line eastwards towards Chlumec nad Cidlinou: 1.6 km direct to the north-east, or via a 4.2 km loop line to the south-east.

The roughly hourly through "fast" trains between Nymburk and Chlumec use the loop line to avoid reversal at Velký Osek station. The through trains between the Kolín and Chlumec directions listed below should use the direct curve - confirmation would be welcome.

 SSuX5271Kolín - 06:31 Velký Osek – Nový Bydžov
 SSuO5273Kolín - 06:55 Velký Osek - Chlumec nad Cidlinou
 SuX5278Jaromĕř – 21:50 Sány – Kolín

Stopping passenger trains, starting / terminating at Velký Osek to/from the Chlumec line, are allowed either 5-7 minutes, or 11-12 minutes, between Velký Osek and Sány. Despite appearances, these should not be assumed to correspond to use of the direct curve and the loop line respectively. Instead, stopping trains appear to be booked to use one route when arriving at Velký Osek, and the other route when departing, in order to avoid running round; the longer times arise when a train must wait at the junction of the two routes to gain its booked route. Observations in 2005 suggest that usually the loop line is used when arriving at Velký Osek, and the direct curve when departing. However, this is obviously subject to disruption if trains are running out of course. Also, as either route can be reached from all platforms and no indication of direction is given on Velký Osek departure sheets, this may not apply to all services - further information would be welcome.

Nymburk město – Veleliby [061, 071] (35B3, 22) CZ07/4

The direct line is used by trains between Nymburk město and Veleliby or Křinec which are not booked to call intermediately at Nymburk hl.n.

 SuOR 1460Jičin - 19:12 Křinec - Praha-Vršovice

Dolní Zálezly (výhybna Ústí nad Labem jih) – Ústí nad Labem západ [090, 130] (35B1, 08A) CZ07/5

Reinstatement of a service withdrawn on 12 December 2004. This west to south curve is used by a 2 hourly Praha to Cheb service to avoid a reversal and is shown by a * in table 090 or no entry in table 130 against the timing for Ústí nad Labem hl. n. The junction at Ústí nad Labem západ is west of the station; trains using this route stop at platforms still on the curve.

Praha-Holešovice – Praha-Liben [010, ML] (35A2, 36A-B) CZ07/6

A frequent local service listed as table ML [Městská Linka] (between tables 091 and 092) runs via this route on Mondays to Fridays in addition to EC/IC services that use this route to avoid calling at Praha hl. n.

Žatec avoiding line: Žatec západ – Žiželice (odbočka Velichov) [120, 160] (35B1, 18) CZ07/7

Service withdrawn on 9 December 2006.

Postoloprty avoiding line: Březno u Postoloprt (odbočka Bažantnice) – Výškov v Čechách (odbočka Vrbka) [123, 127] (35B1 not shown, 19) CZ07/8

This east to north curve is used by trains between the Louny and Obrnice directions.

Březno u Postoloprt (Louny předměstí St. II) – Louny předměstí (St. III) [126, 127] (35B1, 19) CZ07/9

This south to west curve has a very restricted service compared with the other two sides of the triangular layout at Louny předměstí.

Praha-Vysočany – Praha-Libeň [231] (35A2, 36B) CZ07/10

All Praha Masarykovo – Lysá nad Labem – Kolín services travel via this single-track curve (as shown on the Praha inset of the Quail map), with a reversal some way to the west of Praha-Libeň station.

The Nové spojení project will provide direct access between Praha Masarykovo n. and Vysočany, and this route is likely to close to passengers in due course.

Břevnice – Havlíčkův Brod [238] (41A3 not correctly shown, 56) CZ07/11

There are two routes for arrivals and departures on table 238 involving opposite direction of travel. There are separate platforms at the eastern side of Havlíčkův Brod station that lead to a northern route that is not shown on many maps, but it has been known for table 238 trains to arrive at or depart from these platforms in either direction. Alternatively, trains run into or out of the main part of the station and these arrive/depart in the Jihlava direction. The current table 238 timetable has a limited number of through trains to/from table 250 and one has been confirmed as using the eastern side platforms and the northern route to avoid reversing at Havlíčkův Brod. Therefore the longer northern route may be used by :-

   R 889 Pardubice hl n – 08:36 Chotěboř – Jihlava *
   R 887 Pardubice- Rosice n.l – 16:31 Chotěboř – Jihlava *

   R 888 Jihlava – 17:12 Havlíčkův Brod – Pardubice hl n

Mutěnice – Kyjov [former 257] (41B2-42A2, 88 - 76) CZ07/12

This curve is used by trains between Český Těšín and Studénka if routed via Havířov, but not Ostrava hl.n.

Regular scheduled services are shown for the first time since 17 May 1998 with three SSuO pairs between 2 May and 30 September, but the timetable note on chartering a train on the branch at any other time for a fare equivalent to 40 return tickets still remains. Bookings can be made in advance, by telephone or in person to the railway station Litovel predmestí, telephone 972 743 742.

Blažovice – Holubice [300] (41B2, 75) CZ07/17

This connection between the Brno - Veselí nad Moravou line and the Brno - Přerov line is used by a number of trains between Brno and Přerov for pathing reasons. Changes are sometimes made to accommodate late running. These trains are recognisable in the timetable by the wavy line marking against stations Holubice to Chrlice inclusive.

Dětmarovice avoiding line: Závada (odbočka Závada) – Karviná hl.n. (odbočka Koukolná) [320] (42B3, 47C) CZ07/18

This is an alternative route between Brno hl.n. and the Veselí nad Moravou line, involving reversal at Brno-Židenice instead of use of the loop via Brno-Černovice. Trains using this route are recognisable in the timetable by the wavy line marking against Brno-Černovice.
