Enthusiast's Guide to Travelling the Railways of Europe

ITALY (Italia)

Lines with obscure or sparse passenger services

This list is based on the timetable in force until 13 December 2008, unless otherwise stated. Several companies publish railway timetables in Italy, but table numbers quoted here are from In Treno, the official Trenitalia book. Standard abbreviations used are explained in the General Information document.

Westbound and northbound trains normally have even train numbers. Eastbound and southbound trains normally have odd numbers. Trains may, therefore, have several numbers during the course of a journey. For example, the 07:01 Bergamo to Ventimiglia, which runs west to Milano, south to Genova and then west again, is successively IR1786, IR1787 and IR1788. In the tables below the train number used is that applicable at the last stop before the route concerned. Where two train numbers are shown, that is because they vary with the day of operation. Trains running on only a few days during the Christmas and New Year holiday period are not included in the lists; none use lines without any other passenger service.

Passengers without cars may make reservations on Auto al Seguito car-carrying trains marked Aa within 15 days prior to departure, if any places remain available.

Lines are listed in geographic order, from north to south, grouped by region. However, the Firenze - Roma direttissima (which passes through the regions of Toscana, Umbria and Lazio) is shown as a separate group. Special Notes and details of Other Sparse Services and Deletions since previous edition can be found at the end of this document.

Lombardia

Como avoiding line: Cucciago (Bivio Rosales) - Chiasso [D1, E3] (40B3) IT08/01

This cut-off line runs through a tunnel to the west of Como.

    CiS155 Zürich HB – 15:48 Lugano - Trieste Centrale
    CiS154 Trieste Centrale – 11:18 Milano Centrale – Schaffhausen

Monza – Sesto S Giovanni [27, 171, 180, 185, M11] (41A3) IT08/02

The lines from Como (“Linea Chiasso”) and from Lecco (“Linea Lecco”) run parallel between Monza and Milano Greco Pirelli.  The Linea Chiasso dive under the Linea Lecco south of Monza.  In general, trains between Chiasso and Milano Centrale follow the Linea Chiasso through the dive under, while those between Lecco and Milano Porta Garibaldi use the flyover.

Milano Nord Bovisa Politecnico - Milano Lancetti (Ferrovie Nord Milano) [401, 402, M9] (41A3) IT08/03

Trains to and from Milano Rogoredo starting and terminating at Milano Nord Bovisa Politecnico, or to and from stations on the Seveso line, run direct between Milano Lancetti and platforms 7 and 8 on the east side of Milano Nord Bovisa Politecnico station. Those between Milano Rogoredo and Saronno run via a tunnel below the line from Milano Nord Cadorna and use platforms 1 and 2 on the west side of Milano Nord Bovisa Politecnico station.

Rho – Milano-Certosa [11, 40, 160, 165, M10] (41A3) IT08/04

The lines from Domodossola (“Linea Varese”) and from Torino (“Linea Novara”) run parallel through Rho.  The Linea Varese dive under the Linea Novara between Rho and Milano-Certosa.  Various crossovers allow exceptions, but in general trains between Gallarate and Milano Porta Garibaldi (main line station or passante) follow the Linea Varese through the dive under, while those between Gallarate and Milano Centrale use crossovers to the Linea Novara west of Rho.

Milano Porta Garibaldi (Quadrivio Ghisolfa) - Milano Lambrate (Bivio Musocco) [26, M8] (41B3) IT08/05

Most trains between Milano Porta Garibaldi and Milano Lambrate run direct via Bivio Mirabello. This curve, together with route IT08/06, enables trains via Milano Lambrate to arrive and depart at the west end of Porta Garibaldi. Trains using the west-facing terminal platforms, 1 to 12, are obliged to run via Bivio Musocco as are those calling at Villapizzone. Running time between Porta Garibaldi and Lambrate via Bivio Musocco is at least twenty minutes.

Milano Certosa (Triplo Bivio Seveso) - Milano Lambrate (Bivio Turro) [B3, E1, M8] (41B3) IT08/06

This line around the north side of Milano is used by trains between the Rho and Bologna or Brescia lines, if not calling at Milano Centrale or Milano Porta Garibaldi.  Trains via route IT08/05 run via this line, as do:

    EN313 Zürich HB – 00:58 Brig – Roma Termini
    EN227 Paris-Bercy - 21:37 Dijon Ville - Roma Termini

Milano Lambrate - Pioltello-Limito [12, 185, M12] (41B3) IT08/07

There are two routes between Milano Lambrate and the main line towards Brescia.  Most trains use a direct connection off the main line between Milano Lambrate and Milano Rogoredo at Bivio Lambrate.  Others, particularly some to and from Milano Porta Garibaldi or Milano Greco Pirelli, use the alternative route, which passes to the east of the carriage sidings south of Lambrate.  Use of the eastern route may depend on line occupation and punctuality, as crossovers south of Lambrate provide an alternative.

Milano Lambrate - Milano Rogoredo (via Posto di Movimento Trecca) [26, 45, M8] (41B3, not shown correctly) IT08/08

There are two routes between Milano Lambrate and Milano Rogoredo.  Most trains use the main line, but there is an alternative, via a dive-under from the east side of the layout at Lambrate.  Trains between Porta Garibaldi or Greco Pirelli and Rogoredo are particularly likely to use this route, but crossovers south of Lambrate provide an alternative.  The dive-under provides the only route between Lambrate and Porta Romana, so is used by all trains between Milano Greco Pirelli and Milano S Cristoforo. These diverge from the route to Rogoredo at Posto di Movimento Trecca.

Milano Porta Romana (Bivio Porta Romana) - Milano Rogoredo [3.1, 3.3] (41B3) IT08/09

This west to south curve is used by some high summer Auto al Seguito services to and from Milano S Cristoforo. There are no longer any peak services from Pavia and Piacenza to Milano Porta Romana.

Milano Rogoredo - Pioltello-Limito (via Posto di Movimento Trecca  and Milano Smistamento) [B1, 12, 26, 185] (41B3) IT08/10

This route is used by trains between the Brescia and Bologna or Genova lines if not booked to call at Milano Centrale, Lambrate or Porta Garibaldi. From Posto di Movimento Trecca it passes under the main line to Milano Lambrate and runs along the north side of Milano Smistamento.  The frequent trains between Pioltello-Limito and Milano Porta Vittoria use a different route.

E SSuO IR1791 Ventimiglia - 22:49 Milano Rogoredo – Bergamo

Pioltello Limito – Treviglio [12, M12] (41B1, not shown) IT08/11

Two additional tracks came into use between Pioltello Limito and Treviglio in July 2007.  These follow a different route east of Melzo, bypassing Trecella and Cassano d’Adda and are used by most trains not stopping between Milano Lambrate and Treviglio.  There is no connection from the new fast lines to the Bergamo branch at Treviglio, so all trains to and from Treviglio Ovest continue to use the old line.  The only trains scheduled to run non-stop via the old line and Treviglio are:

    R2089 Milano Centrale – 07:23 Milano Lambrate – Venezia S Lucia
R2101 Milano Centrale – 14:23 Milano Lambrate – Verona Porta Nuova

Milano Rogoredo (Doppio Bivio S Donato) - Tavazzano [45] (46B3, not shown) IT08/12

The first section of the Milano - Bologna high speed line is in use between Milano Rogoredo and Tavazzano.  For most of the way it runs to the southwest of the old main line.  The original junction at the south end of the line, at S Zenone al Lambro, has been replaced by a new one at Tavazzano.  This makes provision for further extension of the high speed line.  The only trains not stopping at Melegnano, but scheduled to run via the old line, are:

Verona north-south avoiding line: Domegliara-S Ambrogio (Bivio S Massimo) – Buttapietra or Dossobuono (Bivio S Lucia) [4.1, 50] (47B3) IT08/31

This line could be used by trains between the Trento and Bologna or Mantova lines if not advertised to call at Verona Porta Nuova.  However, all such trains currently reverse at Verona Porta Nuova.

Domegliara-S Ambrogio (Bivio S Massimo) - Verona Porta Nuova [50] (47B3, not shown) IT08/32

There are two routes from the Trento line into Verona Porta Nuova, which divide at Bivio S Massimo. The connection used by most trains joins the Brescia line from the north. The other passes below the Brescia line and joins the line from Bologna at Verona Porta Nuova Scalo. This route appears to be used by trains between the Trento line and platforms 10, 11 and 12 at Porta Nuova. Through trains between Trento and Bologna generally run this way.

Verona west-south avoiding line: Castelnuovo del Garda (Bivio Fenilone) – Buttapietra or Dossobuono (Bivio S Lucia) [12, 50,186] (47B3) IT08/33

Buttapietra or Dossobuono (Bivio S Lucia) - Verona Porta Nuova [50] (47B3, not shown) IT08/34

There are two routes from the Bologna and Mantova lines into Verona Porta Nuova, which divide at Bivio S Lucia. One runs south of the locomotive depot via Verona Porta Nuova Scalo. The other runs on an embankment north of the locomotive depot. The northern route is used mainly by trains to and from the lower-numbered platforms at Porta Nuova and the southern one by those to and from the higher-numbered ones. However, most platforms are accessible from both routes.

Piemonte

Bussoleno - Salbertrand [10] (45A3) IT08/51

There are two separate single track lines between Bussoleno and Salbertrand. One runs along the mountain-side and through a series of short tunnels. This is normally used by trains from Bardonecchia towards Torino. The other runs through longer tunnels, which curve deep into the mountains. This makes the line longer and, therefore, gives an easier gradient for trains climbing towards Bardonecchia. However, both tracks are reversibly signalled and trains may use the opposite line from normal.

Collegno (Torino S Paolo) - Torino Porta Susa (Bivio Crocetta) [A1, B2, 10] (45A2) IT08/52

This west to north curve is used by trains between the Modane and Milano lines, if not booked to call at Torino Porta Nuova. These comprise the trains between Milano and Paris (globally-priced under the marketing name "Artesia") and the overnight service between Milano and Barcelona.

Torino Stura (Bivio Stura) – Trecate (Novara Est) (via Linea Alta Velocità) [11] (45B3 to 40A2, not shown) IT08/53

The new high speed line between Torino and Milano came into use west of Novara on 10 February 2006 and is used by AV and Eurostar Italia trains running non-stop between Torino Porta Susa and Milano Centrale. At Novara trains use a flying junction between the high speed line and Novara Smistamento and the north to east curve onto the old main line. This route does not pass through Novara station is unlikely to be used by passenger trains after the high speed line is completed to Milano.

Few northbound services run via Altare. These arrangements may vary in practice. Exceptions to the general rule are:

Southbound non-stop via Ferrania:

E SuO R20123 Torino Porta Nuova - 10:24 S Giuseppe di Cairo – Savona

Arquata Scriva - Ronco Scrivia - Genova Piazza Principe [26, 30] (46A2) IT08/62

There are two railways between Genova and Arquata Scrivia, the original line to the east and a newer fast line, largely in tunnels, to the west. There are connections between the two at Ronco Scrivia. The only other intermediate station on the fast line is Mignanego.  All trains non-stop between Genova Piazza Principe and Arquata Scrivia, or stopping only at Ronco Scrivia or Mignanego, use the fast line, except:

The following train runs non-stop between Alessandria and Genova Piazza Principe via the old line:

E FO E1671/1675 Torino Porta Nuova – 00:51 Alessandria – Salerno

The following trains are scheduled to use the crossovers between the old and fast lines north of Ronco Scrivia station, running non-stop between Arquata Scrivia and Ronco Scrivia via the old line:

E SuO IR1725 Milano Porta Garibaldi – 08:10 Arquata Scrivia – Sestri Levante

Mignanego (Doppio Bivio Fegino) - Genova Sampierdarena (Bivio Polcevera) [30] (46B2) IT08/63

There are two routes into Genova from the fast line via Mignanego. Most trains run direct through a tunnel, but the following use this spur onto the line from Ovada and run via Genova Sampierdarena.  It is used by trains via route IT08/64 and by:

R2175 Torino Porta Nuova - 00:15 Ronco Scrivia - Genova Brignole
  SSuX R11205 Alessandria - 06:55 Mignanego - Genova Brignole

Genova Brignole (Bivio Traversata) - Genova Sampierdarena [M45] (46B2) IT08/65

In addition to the main lines between Genova Brignole and Genova Sampierdarena, there are separate tracks at lower level via the former Genova Marittima S Limbania station. The low level lines are used by trains booked to use the sotterranea (underground) platforms 1 and 2 at Genova Piazza Principe and to pass through or call at Genova Via di Francia station. There are usually two or three trains each way hourly.

Casella Deposito (Ferrovia Genova Casella) [420] (46B2) IT08/66

Trains to and from Casella Paese mostly reverse at the junction points at Casella Deposito. Those attaching or detaching carriages run into the depot.

Riomaggiore - La Spezia Centrale [31] (46B1) IT08/67

There are two different routes between Riomaggiore and La Spezia Centrale, both being reversibly-signalled single tracks. Trains generally observe left-hand running, as is usual in Italy. Accordingly, southbound trains normally use the inland route via the longer tunnel, whereas northbound trains run through the shorter tunnel and then follow the coast.

S Stefano di Magra - Arcola (Bivio Arcola) [250] (47A1, not shown) IT08/68

Following closure of the line via Ponzano Magra, trains running direct between Aulla and Sarzana use this new north to east curve, linking the Parma and Pisa lines.

Pisa avoiding line: Pisa S Rossore (Dev Navicelli) - Livorno Centrale (Dev Tagliaferro) [1.2, 1.3] (49A2) IT08/81

This north to south curve connects the Genova and Livorno lines west of Pisa Centrale. Some trains not advertised to call at Pisa Centrale run via the station. The following is scheduled to use the avoiding line:

D   E1611 Torino Porta Nuova – 22:15 Genova Brignole - Villa S Giovanni Aa
E FSO  E1621 Milano S Cristoforo – 22:15 Genova Brignole - Villa S Giovanni Aa

Deutsche Bahn AutoZüge to and from Livorno may also use this route.

Pisa Centrale - Livorno Centrale (Bivio Mortellini) [31, 32, M55] (49A2) IT08/82

There are two routes between Pisa Centrale and Bivio Mortellini, which approach opposite ends of Pisa Centrale station. Trains normally use the route that will avoid the need for reversal. Those between Firenze and Livorno use the western route and those between La Spezia and Livorno run via the eastern route. A diveunder is under construction at the east end of Pisa Centrale, so trains taking the eastern route will then use the lower-numbered platforms on the north side of the station, to avoid conflicts with trains to and from Firenze.

Firenze - Roma direttissima

This high-speed line is used by trains between Firenze and Roma, and south of Orte by Ancona trains also. There are eleven connections between the direttissima and the old main line, but that at Settebagni is no more than crossovers where the two lines run parallel. These are not normally used by passenger trains. Some other connections are several kilometres long. Various fast trains use sections of the old main line, to be overtaken by others or during maintenance periods. Routings may vary if trains are running late and if a train misses its path on the direttissima it may be diverted to run via the old main line. A deviation off the direttissima to be overtaken will not necessarily be made if the overtaking train is late.

In headings to each section below, junctions and the next open station on the old main line are listed in the order they would be passed by a southbound train. In all cases 1º Bivio is on the direttissima and 2º Bivio is on the old main line.

Nuovo Salario (Bivio Nuovo Salario) – Roma Tuscolana (Bivio Tiburtina) [47, M70] IT08/125

Local trains between Nuovo Salario and Roma Tuscolana use the “Locale Bassa” line.  This branches off the old main line south of Nuovo Salario station, crosses over the direttissima, passes through the western (low numbered) platforms at Roma Tiburtina, goes under the lines to Roma Termini and rejoins the old main line at Bivio Tiburtina.  Passenger use of the section of the old main line south of Bivio Nuovo Salario as far as Doppio Bivio Nomentana, where the direttissima converges, is confined to any long-distance trains not calling at Roma Termini and using the old line south of Orte.

Roma Termini - Roma Prenestina [75, 85] (52A1) IT08/126

This route is used by AV trains between Roma and Napoli via the new high speed line (see IT08/127) and also by:

    R3378 16:25 Roma Termini – Pescara Centrale
    R2376 18:31 Roma Termini – Pescara Centrale
    R2371 Sulmona – 08:37 Roma Prenestina – Roma Termini
    R3379 Pescara Centrale – 08:52 Carsoli – Roma Termini
    R2375 Pescara Centrale – 17:13 Tivoli – Roma Termini

Roma Prenestina - Marcianise (1° Bivio Gricignano) (via Linea Alta Velocità) [85] (52B3 to 53B1) IT08/127

The new high speed line between Roma and Napoli came into use as far as a temporary connection towards Aversa at Gricignano on 23 January 2006 and is used by AV trains running non-stop between Roma Termini and Napoli Centrale.  The curve off the Linea Alta Velocità at Gricignano is expected to be removed when the line is completed to Napoli.

Roma Prenestina - Capua (via Linea Alta Velocità) [80] (52B3 to 53B1) IT08/128

This route is largely in common with IT08/127.  The Linea Alta Velocità is now used also by the following Eurostar Italia trains to and from Lecce, which use the connection to the Cassino line at Capua.

    ES9351 07:38 Roma Termini – Lecce
    ES9353 13:38 Roma Termini – Lecce
    ES9355 15:38 Roma Termini – Lecce
    ES9352 Lecce – 10:37 Caserta – Roma Termini
    ES9354 Lecce – 16:37 Caserta – Roma Termini
    ES9356 Lecce – 21:42 Caserta – Roma Termini

Other Eurostar Italia services via Caserta run via Formia and the Aversa avoiding line (IT08/132).

Campania

Rocca d'Evandro-S Vittore - Venafro [80, 313] (53B2) IT08/131

This line, which opened in 2001, enables trains to run direct between Cassino and Venafro, without having to reverse at Vairano-Caianello. It is used by IR trains between Roma Termini and Campobasso, plus a few local trains to and from Cassino.

Aversa avoiding line: Gricignano-Teverola - S Marcellino-Frignano [80, 85, 320] (55B3) IT08/132

Special Notes

The Trenitalia timetables suggest that on certain lines fast trains and stopping trains run via different routes, but in fact there is a quadruple line with station platforms on only one pair of tracks.  Such lines include Prato Centrale to Firenze Rifredi and Padova to Venezia Mestre. Some trains between Pescara and Foggia are shown as not passing through the new station, Pescara Tribunale.  This is a compilation error.
