The A556 (Northwich - Altrincham road) used to link M6 junction 19 with M56 junction 7/8 so was an extremely busy road. Thankfully a bypass for Mere has been built, and the old road turned into a rural byway. Looking north towards Mere and the M56 junction, it can been how the original four-lane formation has been tuned into two lanes plus a wide cycle track.
