The railway line eastwards from Beja towards Moura opened in stages: initially 20 km as far as Quintos; then a further 9 km to Serpa (later named Serpa-Brinches) in 1878 including this viaduct over the River Guadiana. The line closed to passenger traffic in 1990, surviving for another 10 years for freight traffic. Photo taken from the adjacent road bridge, hence the shadow.
