The São Domingos to Pomarão Railway, also known as Ramal das Minas de São Domingos, was a 17 km railway to transport the pyrite production from Minas de São Domingos to the river port of Pomarão, on the Guadiana River, where it was unloaded onto ships bound abroad. It was located in the east of the municipality of Mértola, in Portugal. Mining began in 1859 and ended in 1965. Track gauge was 1067 mm and it was always isolated from the main Portuguese rail system.
These photos are of the route inland from Pomarão and the main area of the mines at São Domingos, including several locations en route. Other activities took place along the railway route immediately south of São Domingos, such as refining the raw materials, but they have not been visited. For photos around the Pomarão port area itself, please see this album.
