The southern portal of Stodhart Tunnel - the northern portal and half of the tunnel was destroyed in 1949 when the A624 road was realigned.
Stodhart Tunnel, opened in 1796, is considered to be the second oldest surviving rail-related tunnel in Britain and is Grade II* listed. The oldest surviving rail-related tunnel in Britain is the 1793 Fritchley Tunnel on the Butterley Gangroad.
