The signaller at St Helens Station signal box (just visible beyond the road overbridge) has reversed the crossover to allow the EMU to return from St Helens Central station to Wigan North Western. The man in the hi-vis clothing has clipped the points to prevent them from moving accidentally, and the signaller has then cleared the semaphore shunting signal ready for departure. In the UK, passenger train departures using only shunting signals are not normally permitted; special working instructions were in place for these manoeuvres. Fortunately, when this line was electrified a few years ago, this crossover was included in the wiring.
