Woolston weir on the River Mersey, east of Warrington. The Mersey has left the Manchester Ship Canal by this point. The Woolston Old Cut Canal (1755) and then the Woolston New Cut Canal (1821) bypassed this area to aid navigation up the river to Manchester, finally being replaced for navigation by the Ship Canal in the 1890s.
