The Italianate-style hydraulic lift tower at Birkenhead Hamilton Square railway station. The station was opened in 1886 for the Mersey Railway's route between Liverpool James Street and Green Lane. Initially steam operated, electric trains started in 1903, with the lower faded sign advertising the fact. Three lifts take passengers to the platforms, which are at a deep level due to having to pass under the River Mersey.
