Chapel Lane Crossing signal box and level crossing, east of Parbold on the line towards Wigan. The box is not a block post but just controls the crossing, which is on a very minor no-through road leading only to some houses, so does not see much vehicular traffic; road users must operate the gates themselves after gaining permission from the crossing keeper. The box has a five lever frame: a stop signal each way, a distant signal each way (the Down Distant is electrically worked) and the crossing gate release lever. Pedestrians have wicket gates which are free at all times. The road gates are normally locked closed to road traffic, with all signals in the clear position. The crossing keeper must seek permission from Parbold box, by bell code, to ensure there is no rail traffic in section, before putting the signals back to 'stop' and releasing the crossing lock.
