Down the hill from Portugalete Metro station is the transporter bridge known as Vizkaya (Biscay) Bridge, crossing the Nervión River in Bilbao. The river is navigable so this type of bridge permitted easy passage of shipping. Opened in 1893 this is the oldest working bridge of this type in the world. The bridge is a listed UNESCO World Heritage site.
