Looking northwards towards Gijón at Bifurcación Pajares, where the new Pajares variante high speed line (straight on) and the classic line (to the right, where the railtour is running from) diverge. The Pajares variante would open a few weeks after this photo was taken, at the end of November 2023. Some sources stated that the new line would be double track, one standard gauge and one track dual standard/broad gauge; clearly this was incorrect as most of the standard gauge rails are missing at the junction. Only the broad gauge tracks are useable.
